When Andrew Matthews arrives to work, there's something about the new hire, Charlotte...She's special.
A short fantasy story by Michelle Bolanger.
Special - Ch 6
“Buck said the supernatural was everywhere. He wasn’t kidding was he?”
“Nope.” She flipped her hair over her shoulder and bit her lip. Charlotte’s smile was mischievous again. We had wandered to the end of the pier and there weren’t many people around. The air was brisk coming off the water, and I pulled her closer when she shivered. She stared silently over the lake before meeting my eyes again.
“Buck said you like me.” Her cheeks pinked.

“Charlotte clearly told you what she is. It’s up to me to tell you the rest of it.”
“The rest of what?” I glanced over my shoulder at her door. I wasn’t sure how much more I could handle in one day.
“She’s not the only one who’s special.” Buck’s voice was further away, and against my better judgment, I followed him into his apartment.
I pushed the door closed and looked around. The layout was a mirror image of Charlotte’s, but where hers was decorated in warm browns and gold, Buck’s apartment was stark white, grey, and blue. It reminded me of a ski trip I’d taken in Alaska, and I shivered though the air wasn’t cold.
A grey leather sectional dominated the room and a plush white rug covered the floor in front of it. As my eyes drifted to the artwork on his walls, I took a trembling step toward the door when I realized all the images were wolves.
Not possible.

“What?” I leaned over her shoulder and searched the screen. “We were six months behind, and you got three months of entries done and re-categorized in one morning?”
“Is that bad?” Charlotte folded her hands in her lap. “I should have had it all done, but…” she looked up at me, “I was distracted.”
Unable to believe what I was seeing, I scrolled through the entries, mentally working through the categories and expenses. “It’s not bad, Charlotte, but if you keep working this fast you’ll be out of a job in a week!”
That made her thump her head on the desk, and I resisted a chuckle when she banged her forehead against the book.
“Slow down. That’s what dad always tells me. But I can’t.” She rolled her head sideways to look up at me. “You made everything speed up.” She touched her chest, and I exhaled like I’d been kicked. “In here. You made everything…crazy.”
Special - Ch 3
She looked at my through her lashes. “Why me?”
I tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and thought about my answer. “Because you are just you. You don’t try to impress me or say what you think I want to hear.” My fingertips trailed across her cheek, and she blushed. I smiled. “Being this good looking and rich makes it hard to find a woman who will just be herself around me.”
She giggled and leaned away. “You think you’re good looking?”
I dropped my hand and pulled the key from the ignition. “Gorgeous, actually, but I didn’t want to sound vain.”
Special - Ch 2
“A — a date?” If she was surprised a second ago, now her eyes were wide with shock. “With you?”
“I think that’s what I said.” I crossed my arms and waited for her response.
A mischievous look crept into her expression and I shivered. “So, I can juggle any time I want?”
“Yes.”
“But if I drop one, I have to go out with you?”
I nodded. “Yes.”
Special - Ch 1
Staring at her like an idiot and unable to speak, I blinked as she eyed me curiously.
Finding my voice, I assured her, “I’m fine. And he’s not the boss.”
“Oh.” She glanced over her shoulder, an adorably confused look on her face. “They told me Andrew Matthews was the store manager.”
For a moment I considered telling her I was Andy Matthews, and I was the owner, not the manager, but my curiosity about who she was skyrocketed.
“He’s actually the owner,” I said.
Her brows shoot up, and I choked back a laugh.
